University towns 'have price premium'

2008-09-01

New evidence has emerged to indicate that university towns have a price premium, suggesting they may offer a strong investment prospect.

The annual Halifax University Town House Price Review, covering 64 university towns, revealed that 17 had a premium on their prices of at least £10,000 on their county average and of these nine had a premium of £20,000 or more.

In the past five years three cities - Belfast, Dundee and Bradford - saw rises of 100 per cent or higher.

At the same time the locations with the largest student populations also saw substantial increases, with Manchester (73,000 students) up 63 per cent and Liverpool (54,000) up 71 per cent.

Last week property portal propertyfinder.com found that almost all the locations in its top 20 for both buyer and renter interest in August had university campuses.

It suggested this was due to the release of A-levels during the month, which meant young people heading into higher education could complete their preparations for the academic year ahead.
