Bodrum tourism may rise thanks to sinkings

2008-08-29

The deliberate sinking of two old warships may help the Turkish resort of Bodrum see a growth in tourism, it has been stated.

Last year the Bodrum Black Island Artificial Ledge and Sunken Rocks project came into being, with an aircraft also sunk in the vicinity, in a bid to attract divers, Hurriyet reports.

The aim is to try to raise the number of tourists coming to the resort to dive on the wrecks by 150,000 each year, with the craft providing shelter for many marine creatures.

Chairman of the Bodrum Underwater Association (BOSAD), Ihsan Kucukunal told the Turkish Daily News this week the Black Island had created a lot of interest and added: "Our aim is to increase the diving points other than the Black Island and thus bring more tourists to our country."

Last week Turkish publication Today's Zaman said the tourist economy in the country has grown rapidly since the 1990s.
