Scottish government pledges to stamp out 'rogue property managers'

2008-07-03

A new scheme that is intended to provide homeowners with greater peace of mind and stamp out rogue property managers, or factors, has been launched in Scotland.

The Scottish government insists that the new accreditation scheme will recognise those property managers that meet the highest standards of service and provide clear billing and accounting information.

A new voluntary code will be drawn up that will be managed by an industry-led body featuring representatives of all areas of housing interest, including consumers.

Commenting on the service, Scottish communities minister Stewart Maxwell stated: "Homeowners will be able to appoint accredited property managers in the knowledge that they will provide a quality service. This is a wake-up call for the minority of property managers delivering a substandard service."

An investigation by the Office of Fair Trading will feed into the new accreditation system and the Scottish government is looking at the possibility of creating tougher laws to tackle unacceptable practices.

Consumers groups and housing organisations have welcomed the accreditation scheme, claiming it addresses issues that have been a problem for the property sector for some time.
